Artificial Intelligence “Indoors” and “Outdoors” (by Diego Fdez-Sevilla, PhD.)

Some time ago the debate on Artificial Intelligence development became a trending topic raised by the comments made on this from Stephen Hawking:

In an article from the BBC Prof Stephen Hawking, one of Britain’s pre-eminent scientists, has said that efforts to create thinking machines pose a threat to our very existence. Prof Hawking says the primitive forms of artificial intelligence developed so far have already proved very useful, but he fears the consequences of creating something that can match or surpass humans.

One of the questions which came to my mind in this subject is about what do we understand as intelligence?

EQ and IQ (©d.fdezsev)

According to the University of New Hampshire psychology department, emotional intelligence is the “ability to validly reason with emotions and to use emotions to enhance thought.” EQ refers to an individual’s ability to perceive, control, evaluate, and express emotions. People with high EQ can manage emotions, use their emotions to facilitate thinking, understand emotional meanings and accurately perceive others’ emotions. EQ is partially determined by how a person relates to others and maintains emotional control.

Intelligence quotient or IQ is a score received from standardized assessments designed to test intelligence. IQ relates directly to intellectual pursuits such as the ability to learn as well as understand and apply information to skill sets. IQ covers logical reasoning, word comprehension and math skills. People with higher IQ can think in abstracts and make connections by making generalizations easier.

Based on this simple definitions, what kind of “Intelligence” is under development?

EQ and IQ, Indoors and Outdoors. (©d.fdezsev)

When setting the premisses of any scientific research, there are scientific models built to perform under laboratory conditions, idealized environments indoors, and then, the outside world full of feedbacks and interactions out of any control.

So, is it Artificial Intelligence being developed to work based on INdoors conditions or OUTdoors? Is it relying on adapting its surroundings to accomplish performance? or has it the capability to adapt and interpret random feedbacks as part of the processing towards performance?

The first scenario will change the world around those machines in order to achieve the performance they were designed for. And therefore, there will be a conflict between over who sets the conditions of the environment shared between machines and humans. (©d.fdezsev).

In the second scenario there would be a level of accommodation between all parts. That requires a complex processing applying intelligence to define priorities between accomplishing performance for machines and humans (professionally and in your private live) and the environment made to suit the demands from the other counterpart (human requirements vs machines). So empathy seems to be a must in this scenario, at least for Artificial Intelligence.

Think and Feel (©d.fdezsev)

Once reached the point of considering that AI needs empathy, I have always wondered about what kind of “feeling” power is being under development. Empathy, curiosity, … And I ask myself:

Could a machine feel insecurity?

Lets imagine a machine going through one of those daily situations we face:

Why have I being waiting for two hours for somebody to attend me while I can see two persons reading the news paper?

Why is the car in front of me breaking every 20m without apparent reason?

Under my point of view, the major challenge/tipping point in developing and integrating artificial intelligence into our sustainability does not come from the capabilities of AI to follow commands. The main challenge comes with the outcome from when a machine face a situation which makes it feel something AND question itself: Should I do something about it? And What? …

I believe that the outcome from such question IS the most important piece of “intelligent” bit to evolve for any-mind with feelings.

Here I even would propose a different type of Intelligence from EQ and IQ, AQ; Awareness Intelligence. The ability of integrating data (EQ) and feelings (IQ) being aware of the impact that the new situation brings into yourself and those around you, reacting accordingly to integrate those changes minimizing negative impact.

In one way it marks the difference between following commands and taking decisions, from being fed with information and develop critical thinking.

I don´t think that even we as specie have mastered such level of intelligence, far more complicated to manufacture it.

But I might be wrong, it wouldn´t be my first time.

Bachelor in General Biology, Masters degree "Licenciado" in Environmental Sciences (2001, Spain). PhD in Aerobiology (2007, UK). Lived, acquired training and worked in Spain, UK, Germany and Poland. I have shared the outcome from my work previous to 2013 as scientific speaker in events held in those countries as well as in Switzerland and Finland. After 12 years performing research and working in institutions linked with environmental research and management, in 2013 I found myself in a period of transition searching for a new position or funding to support my own line of research. In the current competitive scenario, in order to demonstrate my capacities instead of just moving my cv waiting for my next opportunity to arrive, I decided to invest my energy and time in opening my own line of research sharing it in this blog. In March 2017 the budget reserved for this project has ended and its weekly basis time frame discontinued until new forms of economic and/or institutional support are incorporated into the project. The value of the data and the original nature of the research presented in this platform and at LinkedIn has proved to be worthy of consideration by the scientific community as well as for publication in scientific journals. However, without a position as member of an institution, it becomes very challenging to be published.
